| MASSACHUSETTS ZOOS The Franklin Park Zoo, founded in 1913, is the 72-acre site nestled in Boston’s historic Franklin Park, long considered the “crown jewel” of Frederick Law Olmsted’s Emerald Necklace Park System. Highlights of Franklin Park Zoo’s collection include the African lions of the Kalahari Kingdom, Masai giraffe and Grevy’s zebra of the Giraffe Savannah, and western lowland gorillas of the Tropical Forest. Stone Zoo, formerly known as the Middlesex Fells Zoo, is located on a 26-acre site near the sparkling Spot Pond reservoir in Stoneham, MA. Charles Price, Superintendent of the Metropolitan District Commission’s Middlesex Fells Reservation, founded the Zoo in 1905, and in 1969, the site was renamed in honor of Walter D. Stone, a former Zoo Director. Highlights of Stone Zoo’s collection include the snow leopards of Himalayan Highlands, bald eagles of Yukon Creek, hornbills and emperor tamarins of Windows to the Wild, and jaguars and cougars of Treasures of the Sierra Madre. Take a journey...to The Zoo at Buttonwood ...through deep forests, cold mountain streams, windswept salt marshes, and ocean beaches. Along the way, cross a covered bridge to enter the world of a traditional New England farm. On your journey through our Berkshires to the Sea exhibits you'll encounter black bears, mountain lions, bobcats, river otters, bald eagles, seals, and many other animals. We also have Asian elephants, North American bison, and one of the finest rare breed, farm animal collections in the United States.
